BEVERAGE

Whether it is beer, spirits, milk, water or soft drinks, the need for high-impact labelling is as important as it ever was. Advances in self-adhesive (pressure-sensitive) label technology has enabled more manufacturers to move away from traditional wet glue to the cleaner option of labels on roll.

For example, clear labels allow the product to still have a no-label look but with the added benefits of being able to use a generic bottle, reducing costs and yet offering the chance to change the label design or content easily, say for different languages, without incurring high costs.

The explosion of pre-mixed spirit drinks, re-launches of old brands and introduction of new fruit-based and smoothie products in funky new packaging, keeps the labelling and packaging industry busy.

High-volume production lines need the speed and accuracy that only a rotary labelling system can provide. With high-speed labellers, positioned around a continuous motion carousel with maybe 10, 15, 20 or more platforms, gives the ultimate in flexibility if more than one label is needed, such as a neck, body and/or tax-strip / tamper evident seal labels.

Zero down-time non-stop running is often a requirement and one that can be satisfied by designing a labelling system that either has label web splicing capabilities, either manual or automatic or has twin labellers working in tandem, so that when one runs out, the other takes over while the label roll is replenished. The transition between two labellers is handled seamlessly without any non-labelled products.

Usually a basic requirement in food and drink production is for machinery to be splash-resistant to IP65 level, either in the event of spillage or during general washing down. ALS provides IP65 protection to many of its labellers as a standard option.

Special labelling considerations for the beverage labelling include:
  • Tamper evident applications
  • TAX strip
  • Expiry date coding
  • Single and multiple label placement in registration to design features of the bottle
  • Promotional labels: Booklet, multi-page, extended-text, peel-and-reseal
  • Rotary labellers
  • Automatic product speed following (APSF)
  • Zero-downtime, tandem-linked labellers
  • Print and apply outer case barcode labels
  • Pallet labelling
  • IP65 environments - wet, wash-down areas

ALS customers include Arla Dairies, United Distillers, Diagio, Coke-a-Cola, Histogram and GSK amongst others.
